Pascal Bertrand is Professor of Art History (since 2001). For four years (2005-2009) he was in charge of teaching for the Masters degree in the History of Art and Heritage in the University of Bordeaux 3. Since January 2008 he has directed the research team in the History of Art at the Centre François-Georges Pariset (EA 538).
Guest Scholar of the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, Department of Sculpture and Decorative Arts. 2016 July-September.
J. Clawson Mills Fellowship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York. September 2012-August 2013.
His research has principally focussed on the history of tapestry in Europe from the end of the Middle Ages to the present day, a field situated at the intersection of two areas of study, the history of large decorative painting, and the history of the decorative arts. He has organised study days and colloquia, most recently with Philippe Bordes, Professor at the University of Lyons 2, on Portraiture and Tapestry’, which took place at the Musée des Tissus et des Arts Décoratifs de Lyon in June 2010; it took as its central issue what the circumstances and the reasons were for tapestry having been chosen as a medium for portraiture, and what were the specific qualities of the woven portrait compared with other kinds of portrait. He has been asked to take part in editing catalogues for large international exhibitions (New York and Madrid, Colorno (Parma), Milan, Paris) and museums (Chicago Art Institute). He was an associate member of a research seminar on the decorative arts and the history of material culture organised jointly by the Bard Graduate Centre of New York and the INHA (Mew York, May 2010).
